AIRBORNE TOUR

Start the day by the MERDERET RIVER, in the Cotentin Peninsula, where the fiercest battle ever for the 82nd Airborne Division took place. A battle for a bridge and a causeway, vital for the soldiers coming up from Utah.

Visit SAINTE-MERE-EGLISE, a world famous Norman village thanks to John Steele, an American paratrooper who landed on the church steeple on D-Day. Sainte-Mère-Eglise also was a strategic town to be taken by the 82nd Airborne Division on the night of June 6th.

Visit the AIRBORNE MUSEUM in Ste-Mère-Eglise to relive the missions of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions in the early hours of D-Day. Entrance fees are not included in the tour.

In the afternoon, follow in the footsteps of the Screaming Eagles and learn more about their mission, codenamed Albany :

• Thomas Meehan's C47's crash site. Meehan was the leader of Easy Company before Dick Winters took command.

• Brecourt Manor. The destruction of four 105mm guns, firing on the troops coming ashore at Utah Beach, by Dick Winters and 15 men.

• Sainte-Marie-du-Mont and the Dick Winters Memorial.

• Drive through Hiesville, a little village where the 101st established its HQ.

• Angoville-au-Plain. The village is situated near Drop Zone D, where the paratroopers of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment were to land on the night of the invasion.

• End your day in the town of Carentan, where the 101st Airborne Division fought in Normandy for the last time before being repatriated to England to get ready for another operation in Europe : Market Garden in the Netherlands.
